Finding Joy In The Things We Talk About

What are we spending our time talking about? Are we discussing things that genuinely bring us joy?

If someone asks me about someone or something I don’t know much about, I’ll shrug my shoulders or get quiet because I either don’t know much about the person or don’t have much to say about that discussion.

Depending on the topic of debate, since I enjoy learning about new things, I will likely go and find out about the subject. However, on another note, if someone asks me about my favorite subject, the Bible, or asks me about my Heavenly Father or Jesus, that’s a different situation altogether. Why? Because I get joy when I talk about the things that bring me joy. If you’re a parent, then you understand what I mean.

Yes, you enjoy hearing others talk about their family respectively. However, when they ask you about your kids or your family, the well might run out of water before you finish talking. Or, as in my case, try to change the subject respectively. If not, you’re stuck with me until the words run off.

You get the picture; I enjoy talking about my family just as much as reading and sharing the Bible with others. Why? Because it’s alive, it’s powerful and life-changing. It speaks in dimensions; it is truly out of this world as it should be since we’re talking about God’s word, a collection of words that brings life-changing results and hope to the hopeless.

The word of God is more powerful and sharper than any surgical instrument: “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12).

If someone were to ask me about my Heavenly Father, I could tell of all the wonderful ways He’s blessed me with the experience and privilege of knowing Him, especially since I get joy in sharing about the life-changing experience of having a personal relationship with God and the Lord Jesus Christ. I didn’t always know Him as my Father, even though God has never changed.

The journey continues about me knowing who God is and having a relationship with Him. It’s been a welcomed journey of continued daily faith—a faith introduced to me through the gospel of Jesus Christ, which has transformed my life and continues to encourage me daily.

I’ve found tremendous stability and motivation from making it a habit to read the Bible daily, pray, and spend time with other believers. These excellent practices are great stepping stones for spiritual and relational growth with God our Heavenly Father.

Nevertheless, there are times when just thinking about the goodness of God and His love for us brings a smile to my face, and joy fills my heart. It’s the same as when thinking and talking about my family. See how the scripture comes alive. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13).
