The challenges of breastfeeding

What No One Tells You About Breastfeeding

Breast Milk Is Best

Yes, Breastfeeding is the best! There’s no reason to question the great benefits of breast milk and how great it is for both baby and mom.

However, sometimes breastfeeding doesn’t go as planned and moms find themselves struggling and feeling guilty. So, on the one hand, I’m a firm believer of feeding your baby the best, and I agree that breast milk is the best.

Breastfeeding Is Not Always Easy

On the other hand, I know from experience things don’t always go as planned, and specifically when it comes to breastfeeding. There are times and circumstances which cause breastfeeding challenges, and mom’s struggle.

For instance, with the birth of my youngest daughter, I struggled with breastfeeding. To be specific, I delivered her c-section then struggled with milk production and latching.

As such, during these challenging times apart from the support of my family, I didn’t find a lot of encouraging information or advice on what to do for help.

So, with this in mind, how often have you come across supporting information for what to do when a mom struggles with breastfeeding? So, let’s talk about it.

Thus, if you’re a new mom, a seasoned mom, or maybe you know a mom who’s struggling with breastfeeding then here’s some helpful, encouraging information for the journey.

Breastfeeding Is Not One-Size Fits All

When I gave birth to my first baby twenty-two years ago things were so much different. I didn’t decide to breastfeed actually until he was born. For example, it was good labor and delivery, he latched on with no difficulties, and I had no problems with milk production. Again that was twenty-two years ago.

Fast forward to nine months ago, and it was a different experience. Now don’t get me wrong I’m very grateful and blessed beyond what I’m entirely able to express — being that I was able to give birth to my darling daughter well past the age of thirty-eight without any complications.

Breastfeeding Challenges

Breastfeeding Challenges

C-Section Delivery

Having your baby cesarean delivery doesn’t mean you’re unable to breastfeed, but it does have some challenges. For instance, the immediate skin to skin time may be delayed depending on how well things are going for you and baby.

Thus most often if all is well, you should be able to breastfeed in the recovery room but only after you and baby have gone through the stages to recovery.

Delayed Milk Production

Your milk hasn’t come in, and even though the lactation specialist at the hospital has explained to you, this happens you still feel abnormal and want to scream.

Don’t be afraid or ashamed to speak with the nurse or the lactation team and ask for help. At this point, you might have to think about a supplement plan. For instance, bring the baby to breast more frequently, use a breast pump and think about giving baby small amounts of formula.

Low Milk Supply

Your milk has “come in,” and the baby is showing all the signals of eating but your milk supply is not keeping up with the baby’s frequent feeding needs.

Thus whatever the case try not to feel guilty or blame yourself. In truth, if you could, you would be supplying all the milk your baby needs without any difficulties. So, take a deep breath and give yourself a break. Again, if you are experiencing this or know someone who is, please encourage them with kindness.

Conclusion

In conclusion, just remember you’re the best mom for the job and whatever you decide to do you are making the best choice for you and your darling baby. In truth, you chose to breastfeed because you wanted the best nutrition for your baby.

Although breastfeeding may not work for you, you should still have confidence in knowing that you will continue to provide what is best for your baby. Just remember you don’t have to face your challenges alone, reach out to your local lactation consultants or healthcare providers.
