Preparing Preschoolers To Read

Preparing our preschoolers with the skills they need to learn will continue to motivate them and help them grow into successful learners. Our little ones grow up so fast! For instance, it seems like just yesterday we started teaching them potty training skills.

Developing Language Skills

Of course, developing strong language skills is the foundation for building strong readers. There are different ways to help improve the language skills of our toddlers. Thus the proven saying practice makes perfect is fitting especially with toddlers.

Repetition

Toddlers love to learn by repetition, as we know they like to start then do it over and over again. So how does repetition work with learning and developing language?

“Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.” (Zig Ziglar)

Repetition works by gathering the information given then storing it into our long term memory which makes it a pivotal method to our knowledge. For instance, think about how easy our toddlers learn about the body parts from their favorite nursery rhymes.

First, we sing it, and then we repeat it over and over again to them. Then, they start repeating the words which are building their language and learning through repetition.

Music

Also, music is another great learning tool to help our preschooler’s development pre-reading skills. So, again whether your singing songs or listening to toddler-friendly songs this will help them in language development which is necessary for reading.

Practice Reading

Further, preparing toddlers and preschoolers to read takes practice. For instance, we know as parents most often when trying something for the first time we have to jump in and do it.

So, with that in mind go ahead grab a book and start reading. Not only with toddlers but even as babies, we can begin by keeping books in reach, out around in their play area or a bookshelf.

For example, be sure to get fun, age-appropriate books with big picture illustrations are excellent; kids love bright colors and fun pictures.

Story-Telling

Similarly, reading aloud to your child improves their language skills by hearing and seeing the words as you read, thus increasing their vocabulary and pre-reading skills.

Another great way to impress learning is through pretend and play; this is learning with less effort and tons of fun. Toddlers enjoy imagination engaging activities, for example, use creative character names, and voice-overs.

Book Club

Also, joining a toddler book club is an excellent way to find books that are engaging for your toddler. Similarly, your local library is another way to get books, and most often your local library will offer a preschooler reading program.

Conclusion

Thus, reading is fundamental! Learning is tons of fun and teaching our preschoolers the necessary skills for reading is a great way to help them become successful readers when they’re ready to start school.
